Óptica Carreras Optometry
At Óptica Carreras we carry out personalised optometric examinations, tailored to each patient's needs and visual problems, using cutting-edge technology.
Our team of professionals is in continuous training, constantly keeping up with the latest technological and academic advances, because we firmly believe that investing in knowledge is investing in our patients' visual health.
Eye examination
At Óptica Carreras we offer a service of excellence based on a complete, rigorous visual assessment.
Our eye examination includes preliminary and specific tests that allow us to assess not only your prescription but also other fundamental aspects of binocular vision and eye health.
In our eye examination we assess:
- Your prescription
- Preliminary tests
- Intraocular pressure measurement
- Eye health (anterior segment and fundus, with OCT)
- Corneal topography
- Further tests where necessary
Refraction assessment
Assessment of your prescription. We explore refractive errors with objective and subjective tests to obtain a more accurate, comfortable prescription:
Myopia (short-sightedness)
Difficulty seeing in the distance. Common signs include:
- Squinting to see the board.
- Getting too close to books, paper, phones or screens.
- Blurred distance vision.
Hyperopia (long-sightedness)
Difficulty seeing clearly up close without effort; in some cases distance and/or near vision may seem fine. Frequent symptoms:
- Slow reading.
- Concentration and attention problems.
- Eye strain after reading or writing.
- Headaches.
- Frequent eye rubbing.
Astigmatism
A defect in the curvature of the cornea causing blurred vision at both distance and near. It can be combined with myopia or hyperopia. Some symptoms:
- Headache.
- Eye discomfort.
- Distorted vision.
Presbyopia (tired eyes)
Progressive loss of the ability to focus up close due to stiffening of the crystalline lens. It usually appears from age 40-45.
- Blurred near vision.
- Headache.
- Eye strain.
Intraocular pressure measurement
We measure intraocular pressure as a fundamental part of monitoring eye health and preventing conditions such as glaucoma.
New technology
OCT - Optical Coherence Tomography
We have an OCT, state-of-the-art laser technology that provides high-resolution images of the retina and optic nerve.
Thanks to powerful software, we can reconstruct the eye's structures in 3D and at cellular level — something unthinkable only a few years ago.
OCT is especially useful for the detection, study and monitoring of conditions affecting the macula, the vascular system and the optic nerve.
Binocular vision
The optometrist is a healthcare professional responsible for the care and improvement of vision and visual function.
During the eye examination we analyse all the visual functions needed for comfortable reading and writing:
- Eye movements (oculomotor control)
- Focusing ability
- Binocular control (the ability to coordinate both eyes)
Binocular vision
This is the ability to coordinate both eyes so that the brain fuses the two images into a single three-dimensional image. When this coordination fails, an eye turn (strabismus) may appear, or less obvious problems that demand great visual effort, such as convergence insufficiency.
In these cases it may be necessary to:
- Prescribe specific lenses
- Carry out vision therapy to improve eye coordination
Accommodation
Accommodation is the crystalline lens's ability to focus at different distances, allowing us to switch from far to near automatically.
When there is an accommodative dysfunction, children, teenagers and young adults may experience:
- Excessive effort when reading
- Visual fatigue
- Difficulty sustaining attention
- Blurred distance vision after reading up close
That is why specific visual examinations are essential, especially in a society where near-vision demand has grown exponentially.
Eye movement assessment
We analyse the precision of saccadic movements, essential for reading and writing, and pursuit movements, which allow us to follow moving objects or switch our gaze between the board and the desk.
When eye movements are not precise and efficient, symptoms can appear that affect visual, academic and work performance.
The most frequent symptoms:
- Difficulty following a text
- Skipping words or lines
- Losing your place when reading, or needing to use a finger
- Slow reading
- Difficulty copying from the board
- Poor reading comprehension
In children, these problems are easily mistaken for lack of attention or poor academic performance.
