Óptica Carreras Progressive lenses
Do you hold your phone at arm's length to read messages? Having trouble reading up close? Need more light? That's presbyopia it appears naturally from around age 40-45 and, sooner or later, affects everyone. The good news: there is a comfortable, elegant solution progressive lenses (also known as varifocals).
What are progressive lenses?
Progressive lenses (varifocals) correct your vision at every distance far, intermediate and near within a single lens, with no visible lines and no image jump.
Unlike bifocals, the power changes gradually, so your eyes move naturally from one distance to another. They are the most complete solution for presbyopia and the one that best mimics how we would see before needing near vision correction.
Why have your progressives fitted at Óptica Carreras
Not all progressive lenses are the same and, above all, not all fittings are the same. The success of varifocals depends 50 % on the quality of the lens and 50 % on how precisely it is measured, centred and mounted. At Óptica Carreras we have been fitting visual solutions in Maó since 1928, and we offer:
- Millimetre-precise measurements. We use the latest instruments to measure how you actually wear your glasses: reading distance, frame position, eye movement. Every lens is made for you, not for a "standard" wearer.
- Essilor Varilux accreditation. We are an Essilor-accredited practice within the Varilux programme, which certifies opticians offering the best service, products and care. Essilor invented the progressive lens.
- A real adaptation guarantee. If you don't adapt to your progressives, we review your case again at no cost and cover any changes needed. Our commitment is that you see well — not simply that you buy glasses.
- Three generations of experience. Families across Menorca have trusted us for over 95 years. English spoken.
How we fit your progressive lenses, step by step
- Complete eye examination. We assess your prescription and the overall condition of your visual system — not just how much you see.
- Frame and lens selection. We help you choose a frame that works well with progressive lenses and the lens design that best suits your lifestyle (screens, driving, sport, reading).
- Personalised measurements. We capture all your real-life wearing parameters with precision technology.
- Delivery, adjustment and follow-up. We fine-tune the frame, explain how to get used to your lenses during the first days, and follow up until you are fully adapted — backed by our adaptation guarantee.
Frequently asked questions about progressive lenses
How long does it take to get used to progressive lenses?
Most people adapt within a few days; occasionally it can take two to three weeks. Precise measurements and correct centring — as performed at Óptica Carreras — greatly shorten that period. And if anything isn't right, our adaptation guarantee covers it.
Is it true that vision is blurry at the sides with varifocals?
Modern progressive lenses have dramatically reduced the peripheral soft zones of early generations. With a well-centred, personalised lens, the vast majority of wearers lead a completely normal life: driving, working on screens, playing sport.
Progressives or two pairs of glasses (distance and reading)?
It depends on your lifestyle, but progressives avoid constantly swapping glasses and also cover the intermediate distance (computer, car dashboard, shelves), which two conventional pairs don't solve. We'll assess the best option with you, with no obligation.
Can I wear progressive contact lenses instead of glasses?
Yes. We also fit multifocal contact lenses, on their own or combined with progressive glasses — an excellent option for sport, summer, or if you prefer not to wear glasses every day.
